Recommended Sterilization Sequence

 

Disinfection:
Place the contaminated instrument into the disinfecting solution of your choice. Be sure to follow all manufacturers’ instructions concerning dilution and duration. Disinfecting solutions must be thoroughly rinses away under running water.

NOTE: Excessive concentration of solution may result in damage to plastic handles. Do not use products containing either phenol or rust protection. Salt deposits must be brushed off. NaOCL, as normally diluted will usually affect stainless steel after 4 hours of exposure.

 

Cleaning:
Manual cleaning and ultrasonic cleaning are both acceptable.

 

Rinsing & Drying:
Thoroughly rinse away cleaning and disinfecting solutions under running water. Then dry instruments.

 

Sorting:
Examine instruments for:

  • Plastic deformation of handles
  • Pre-curved instruments
  • Untwisted threads
  • Damaged cutting edges
  • Blunt edges (if glassy)
  • NiTi instruments with excessive usage

 

Discard all instruments that are not in usable condition.

 

Sterilization:

  • Maximum temperature: 200 Degrees C or 390 Degrees F
  • Acceptable methods: Autoclave, Chemoclave, Dry Heat

 

NOTE: Never place instruments into new unwashed sponges for sterilization as it may cause instrument breakage.
